Whive wins Vision 2030 ICT award for Gender, Youth and Vulnerable Groups Sector

Kenyan based social media aggregator Whive.com has won a Vision 2030 ICT award for the Gender, Youth and Vulnerable Groups sector. The award ceremony which was at Leisure lodge Diani, Mombasa, Kenya also featured 10 other companies being given awards in different sectors of the Vision 2030 ICT pillar. Present to receive the award from judge @AlKags was Whive C.E.O and Founder John Karanja.

As a winner we got a commemorative trophy, certificate and $1,000 prize money from Accenture. The overall best innovation award was awarded to International Livestock Research Institute for their mobile-ICT based livestock insurance solution. ILRI received an additional $ 5,000 as their award.

Whive.com is a Social Media Tools Aggregator that offers a platform for SMS, Facebook, Twitter and Mobile Applications that are built for local use in Kenyan and African settings. Whive offers a variety of services. Whive differs from other platforms because they are localizing mobile applications to all Kenyan communities by making them available in local languages. Starting with Swahili, Sheng and English Whive is seeking to initially target the Kenyan youth with its classifieds application. These applications will also form a basis of lingual translation services of key Kenyan languages.

Whive has over the past one year rolled out Facebook, Twitter as well as a Nokia applications for the Kenyan market now provides a comprehensive social media solutions that aim to empower the youth with communication services that they can utilize on a daily basis.

Our new Nokia application( download @ nokia.whive.com) for example is currently providing daily job listings in 3 available lingual user interfaces i.e. English, Swahili and Sheng. This particular application emerged from our experience of providing the draft constitution on mobile platform during the 2010 referendum. During the same period we also released Social  SMS applications on two of the worlds leading Social Network; Facebook and Twitter. This increased the utility of these platforms for the aforementioned Kenyan Groups. The Facebook application (see facebook.whive.com) has seen significant adoption amongst the Kenyan youth with it being used as a forum for discussion of youth issues.

With the continued evolution of these applications Whive will continue to improve its platform and offer useful communication services that are important sector within Kenya’s Vision 2030 plan of creating a well informed society and a Knowledge based Economy.
